Computer vision syndrome refers to an eye condition that occurs when the eyes have been damaged by prolonged exposure to blue light, which is emitted from computer screens, tablets, smartphones, and similar devices. This is an especially common condition among desk workers, but it can happen to anybody who spends a lot of time in front of a screen. Some of the most common signs of computer vision syndrome include:
If you think you may be suffering from computer vision syndrome, we recommend scheduling an exam with our optometrist. We may prescribe a pair of specialized lenses that you can wear while working in front of a screen to block blue light from further damaging your eyes. We can also make some recommendations for preventing further damage by changing your habits and work environment. For example, you may want to begin implementing the "20-20-20 rule" while on the computer; this means taking a break every 20 minutes to focus on an object that's about 20 feet away from your computer screen for 20 seconds at a time.
Furthermore, make sure you have proper lighting (the more natural the lighting, the better) around your workspace. This will reduce strain on your eyes.
